Safety Guidelines

BIG N ® can be a hazardous product if not used safely. All BIG N customers and their employees should:

  • Be aware of BIG N's physical properties
  • Have a thorough knowledge of equipment and operating procedures
  • Keep equipment maintained
  • Follow safety requirements and
  • Know First Aid procedures in case of injury.
  1. BIG N at normal temperature and pressure is a gas with a very pungent, irritating odour.
  2. The gas can be easily liquefied allowing large quantities to be readily transported and stored.
  3. Treat all hoses as if they still contain very cold liquid ammonia.
  4. Ammonia reacts with copper, zinc and any alloys containing them. Use only iron and steel fittings on ammonia equipment.
  5. Ammonia is very soluble in water. This fact makes water the best first aid in the event on contamination of skin or clothing. Use copious quantities of water to dissolve and remove ammonia contamination.
Vessels and other equipment used for applying BIG N should comply with the relevant Australian Standard.
